Last summer’s popular Clayton tour, Through the Back Door: Domestic Service in the Gilded Age returns this year, and will run from July 1 through September 28. On the lawn, period summer whites will hang on a laundry line based on a nineteenth-century photograph of Clayton. Tours enter Clayton through the back door, as the maids, cooks and other domestic staff once did, and throughout the house artifacts relating to domestic service will be on display.

If you missed your chance to experience Clayton in this new way last summer, or if you want to come back again and learn more about the work of the domestic servants who made life in a home like Clayton possible, make your reservations for this special tour now by calling 412-371-0600.

Self-guided cell phone tours are available to visitors as part of the Frick’s membership in the Tour Anytime network. The network, hosted by the Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area, provides 24/7 cell phone tours related to southwestern Pennsylvania’s historic and cultural heritage. The tour works on any cell phone, takes place entirely outdoors and consists of 11 stops. All you need is a brochure and a cell phone.
